Advantages of Electric Breast Pumps

!±8± Advantages of Electric Breast Pumps

Many women want to provide the unmatched nutrition of pure breast milk to their newborn babies, but unfortunately many women have problems breastfeeding. These problems range from inverted nipples, to the baby not latching properly. Whatever the reason, electric breast pumps can be a priceless addition to your baby items. They can be a fabulous alternative to breastfeeding directly from your breasts, and still give the baby the breast milk he or she deserves.

Electric Breast Pumps

There are two different types of breasts pumps out there - manual and electric/battery-operated. Both work well, but the electric variation works better. Electric breast pumps tend to be more expensive, but they have certain advantages over the manual breast pumps.

Benefits of an Electric Breast Pump

Most lactation specialists and hospitals recommend using electric breast pumps simply because they are more capable of drawing out the breast milk more efficiently. They operate quickly, and free up your hand that you would have been using to pump the milk with the manual version.

The low-end electric breast pumps are very affordable - around . These pumps are great for occasional use, and are generally semi-automatic. You'll generally be able to regulate the number of pumps per minute, and the strength of the suction. The only disadvantage is that the single pumps allow you to only pump one breast at a time. In addition, the batteries on these pumps tend to drain quickly. The battery operation doesn't pump as strongly as when you are using an AC adapter.

Mid-range electric breast pumps have more advantages than the low-end models. Although they are more expensive, many of these models have an adjustable suction. Many of them come with double pumps so you can pump both breasts at the same time, and they are highly portable.

The high-end models are the most expensive, but are extremely efficient and convenient. Many of them are hospital-grade, and are the choice of many working mothers who need something that pumps quickly and efficiently. You'll be able to pump both breasts at the same time, which cuts the pumping time in half. Cycles times are fast, and many of these models are discreet. The newer models have developed a technology that mimics the baby's natural suckling very closely, therefore extracting breast milk much more efficiently.

Of course, most pumps can be a bit noisy, and can be a bit uncomfortable and painful. The higher end models try to make the action of these pumps as painless as possible, but it is inevitable that breasts filled with milk will be a little tender, even to the gentlest touch.

What to Look For in a Pump

The best models should be highly portable so that you can pump even when you are out and about. They should feature adjustable sucking actions, so that you can vary the intensity of the milk extraction and pulling on the nipples. The breast shield sizes should also be adjustable, since all women have different sized and shaped breasts. If you're looking to save time, look for the models that come with dual pumps so you can work both breasts at the same time.

Electric breast pumps can be a great alternative to breastfeeding directly. You'll still be able to nourish your newborn with nutritious breast milk, while having the freedom of pumping whenever you can. By extracting your milk and bottle feeding, even dad can feed the baby when mom is busy!

How I apple-pie the central of a Medela Pump in Style breast pump for additional duke use

This video shows how I disassemble and clean a second hand (used) Medela Pump in Style breast pump. The procedure is very easy (don't even need tools). Of course you perform this operation AT YOUR OWN RISK - Medela and FDA recommendations say you should buy a new pump and that using a used pump is not safe. The FDA says "the proper cleaning of cleaning and sterilization of breast pumps requires the removal of any fluid that has entered the pumping mechanism itself". I believe the procedure I use achieves this requirement. However, I am not an expert so please use your own judgment.

Breastfeeding Pump Provides Convenience And Flexibility

!±8± Breastfeeding Pump Provides Convenience And Flexibility

Most nursing mothers start working as soon as they possibly can after childbirth and using a breastfeeding pump provides them with the flexibility that enables them to go about their daily routine without neglecting the nutritional needs of their babies. When mothers are away from their babies for a long period of time, they can easily use a breast feeding pump before going out and storing their milk so that their babies don't have to depend upon formula milk for their feeds.

Types Of Breastfeeding Pumps

Basically there are two types of breastfeeding pumps that you can choose from depending upon your need and lifestyle. You can either go in for a hand- operated pump or you can choose an electrically operated one. Moreover, you can opt for a pump that operates on one breast at a time or for a breastfeeding pump that can draw milk from both breasts at the same time.

Hand-operated breastfeeding pumps are ideal for infrequent usage when you might need a pump only once in a while. Being small and uncomplicated, these pumps do not cost much and you can get them at most baby stores and drug stores at less than . All that you need to do is to squeeze the handle after fixing the pump on the breast and you can store the milk. You can also use the pump on one breast and feed your baby on the other breast simultaneously.

On the other hand, electric breastfeeding pumps are very useful for those mothers who are working full time and stay away from their babies for eight hours or more. Before going out for work, you can use this pump to extract all the milk from your breasts and store the same for feeding your baby throughout the day. Electric breastfeeding pumps are better stimulators of the breasts so that they are more effective and faster in drawing the milk.

How Much Time Does A Breastfeeding Pump Take To Draw Milk

Obviously, an electric pump is faster than a hand-operated pump and it should be used if you have very little time for this purpose. Moreover, if you are at work and can squeeze in very little time for this purpose, then you can use a double breastfeeding pump that will allow you to pump milk from both the breasts at the same time and allow you to get the required milk in half the time. Hand-operated pumps would naturally take more time than the electric ones.

You can buy a breastfeeding pump from any medical store or from baby stores. The electrically operated breastfeeding pumps are costlier than the hand-operated ones since they are more complicated and are provided with a carrying case and have an insulated milk storage container. The cost of a hand-operated pump is about whereas the cost of an electric pump would be in the region of 0.

A breastfeeding pump is personal equipment and care should be taken to use your own pump and not to rent or borrow it so that you don't catch any infection. Your baby is your most prized possession and looking after its needs should be your first priority and here a breastfeeding pump plays an important role.
